Under The Grape Vines

JonathanFussellAround The Grape Vines

Ever feel like you have a great idea?

I am sure all of you have been in a planning meeting at work, church, chamber, etc. where someone comes up with a great idea.

You leave that meeting and that idea goes nowhere. Eight years ago, one of our staff members came up with a great idea for Dave and me. They recommended us writing a blog.

If you know my brother and me well, you would think this would be something very easy for us to do. Dave and I love talking to people. This is one of the best things about working at Duplin. You get to meet people from all over the world and learn something new. There is nothing better than sitting under our porch in North Myrtle Beach or Rose Hill enjoying a glass of wine with a new friend. The problem I have had with creating a blog is that I hate writing. It is just not natural for me. However, this was a great idea and I need to make sure that we move forward. I hope you all enjoy the first of many secrets that come from Under the Grape Vines at Duplin.

My father was very smart to place me in a different division than Dave when I came to work for the winery after college. He knew that two brothers did not need to work under the same roof. My father and uncle tried this in the 1970s. It did not work out and this is the reason that my uncle left the winery. Dave was put in charge of the production facility, vineyards and distributors/wholesalers. If you think of a human body, Dave is in charge of all the organs that keep the business alive. I was to learn from my father how to run everything a customer sees when visiting the winery in person, online, at an event, etc. My father was very good at his job, but his strong suit was public relations. The media seemed to gravitate toward his personality. I wish I had paid more attention during this training process, because this is my weakness. Dave and I are both very lucky to have a great team of individuals that actually run Duplin Winery. Our job now is trying to figure out how to grow the company. My job for the past three years has been making sure our new winery in North Myrtle Beach is run correctly. I have noticed that I have become very good at picking up trash. So much so, people think I am the janitor and turn me down when I ask if I could do their wine tasting.

I will continue to expand on the breakdown of the winery and really explain, over the next several blogs, why Dave and I have been fired so many times. While you are waiting, please come see me at Duplin. I would love to share a glass of wine with you and get to know a little more about you. No matter if this visit is in Rose Hill or North Myrtle Beach, please remember that Life is Sweeter with Duplin.

Hosting a Wine Tasting Party

WineTastingPartyHosting a Wine Tasting Party

Are you hosting a wine tasting party and don’t know where to start?

It can become easily overwhelming for anyone with having to decide which wine to purchase, which food will be best and of course what decor you should select.

The good news is that Duplin Winery has you covered with these five wine tasting party tips that are sure to make your get together a success!

Follow these easy steps and you will certainly become the host with the most!

1.) Selecting Your Guests

Ideally, if you are hosting a wine tasting party, it should be an intimate gathering. We recommend keeping the number of people to 6 couples or less. If you end up with more than 12 people, it can become a little chaotic. Be sure to invite a crowd that gets along, after all, a wine tasting should be relaxed and fun.

2.) Choose Your Wine

At Duplin, we have over 40 varieties of delicious Muscadine wine available. When it comes to your wine tasting party, select a white, red, blush and another favorite of your choice. Our recommendations would be the Hatteras Red, Magnolia, Scuppernong Blush and Sangria. Once you’ve selected your list of wines, learn a few facts about each of them to share with your guests. These facts could be what grapes the wine is made from, food-pairing options, and flavor and taste of the wine.

3.) How Much Wine

One Duplin Winery bottle is 750 ml, which equals about 25 ounces total. If you are planning on 2-ounce pours, each bottle can pour up to 12 tastes. Don’t forget to have enough wine so that each guest can enjoy 1 to 2 glasses of his or her favorite after the tasting is complete.

4.) Set The Room

Allow yourself plenty of time to set up before your guests begin arriving. Don’t forget the essentials including the wine, corkscrews, glasses, appetizer plates, a pitcher of water and some fresh flowers to decorate the area.

5.) Include Fun Extras

Throw something extra in to thank your guests for coming to join in on your wine tasting party. Create a simple and fun giveaway, drawing a name out of a wine glass to win something special.

If you’ve always wanted to host a wine tasting party but have been hesitant about it, don’t be! It’s easier than you think, especially if you follow these five steps!

Our Duplin Sangrias feature mango, peach and lemon flavors combined with Muscadine grapes. These sweet, citrus-infused wines are delightful over ice and mixed with your favorite fresh fruit. Mix half red and half white for a tasty blush combination!

Margarita & Pina Colada Sweetzer

It doesn’t get much better than a wine slushie in the sweet summertime. Simply mix ½ a bottle of Duplin wine with the Sweetzer kit of your choice and add to a blender full of ice. The Margarita Sweetzer goes with our Carlos wine and the Pina Colada Sweetzer goes with our Magnolia wine.

Summertime Spritzer

Satisfy your thirst with this easy and sweet wine cocktail. Combine 2 and 2/3 cups of Country Time lemonade mix, 1 ½ bottles of Magnolia wine and a 2-liter bottle of Sundrop. Cheers!

Quick Sangria

In addition to our delicious Sangrias, you can make your own concoction with a bottle of our Sunset Red. This recipe calls for ¼ cup sugar, two tablespoons of rum, ¼ cup orange juice, one orange, one lemon, two peaches, one mango and one bottle of Duplin Sunset Red. In a large pitcher combine all ingredients together and then place it in the refrigerator. Allow the sangria to chill for 2-3 hours before serving.

Duplin’s Homemade Wine Coolers

A wine cooler is a perfect solution for those hot and humid summer days. Our recipe calls one bottle of Sunset Red wine and one can of Ginger Ale. Pour the wine into an ice cube tray and freeze. Once the cubes are ready to go, add 1 or 2 into a glass, and simply pour ginger ale.

It’s not summer without a delectable wine cocktail, or two. These five recipes are sure to quench your thirst and be a hit all season long!

Duplin Winery Releases Three New Reserve Wines

ReservesWineDuplin Winery Releases Three New Reserve Wines

Duplin Winery is pleased to announce the launch of three limited Muscadine wines including Black River Red Reserve, Carolina Red Reserve, and Scuppernong Blush Reserve. The term reserve has a genuine meaning, as the grapes used for each wine come from the best vines, making it more unique.

“We are fortunate that the Lord blessed us with a great grape harvest last year. It will be the first time in years that we will be able to produce reserve wines. Our harvest should produce the best tasting wine made since 1995, ”said Jonathan Fussell, Co-owner of Duplin Winery.

Black River Red Reserve: Exotic in character and smooth in finish. This Reserve is ripe with fruit and soft in structure.

Carolina Red Reserve: Demonstrates the delicate aromas and flavors of James Muscadines. The fine texture and smoothness carries North Carolina to you in each glass.

Scuppernong Blush Reserve: Produced with the Scuppernong grapes and softly blended with Coastal James. Scuppernong Blush is precise, pure and elegant.

Each Duplin Winery Reserve is priced at $19.99 and best served chilled. They can be found at both Duplin Winery stores located in Rose Hill, NC and North Myrtle Beach, SC. Consumers can also order online at
