How to Store Wine

WineStorageHow to Store Wine

Let us help you with the best way to store your Duplin wine!

Many of us are so excited to find so many wines that we enjoy when visiting our favorite winery (Duplin) that we fill our carts- then our cars. We arrive home and discover that we need to find a place to store it. Storing wine safely – ensuring it will taste the same over the days, weeks and months ahead until you need it – is an important consideration.

Several tips to remember. Keep it still. Wine, particularly red wines, does not fare well when subjected to vibrations- a refrigerator door opening and closing, for example, will harm the integrity of the wine. Keep it sideways. Real cork is wood that is subject to drying- and shrinking. Keeping a cork in contact with the wine will prevent shrinkage. A dry and brittle cork would allow oxygen to enter the bottle. As air reaches an apple, oxidation occurs, and the apple begins to brown. Oxidation affects wine, in the same manner, the aromas, flavors, and color all start to spoil.

Be sure to store wines in an environment with consistent temperatures. Wines that heat and cool too often tend to spoil quickly. Keep wine in the dark. If wine is in direct light consistently, the flavor will be affected. White wines are most sensitive to light, but reds will decline as well. Keep your wines still, cool, dark and sideways- and if all else fails, you might as well drink it!

**Never throw away a spoiled wine- you can still marinate your favorite meats- or create a delightful salad dressing with wines that taste like vinegar.

Duplin Wine & Halloween Candy

Pairing Duplin Wine with Halloween Candy

October 31st, the best night of the year!

Nothing makes us happier than an evening of pairing buckets full of Halloween candy with the perfect Duplin Wine! Although pairing the candy to the wine is not quite rocket science (really any wine will do), it’s fun to match your favorites!

Years ago, everybody passed out chocolate. Hershey bars, Kisses, and Chocolate M & M’s to name a few. The key to a good wine pairing is to match sweetness to sweetness and weight to weight! A heavier chocolate treat like a Hershey Bar or Kiss deserves more substantial sweet red wine… Carolina Red or even the American Port would be a great pair.

Lightening up the chocolate, the M $ M’s or Kit Kat bars will pair well with a sweet and lighter red wine. Hatteras Red, Black River Red, or Easy will do!

Sweet candy, with added saltiness and textures, gives the drinker an option to be complimentary or congruent. A complimentary pairing may include a bubbly, like a sparkling wine or a fruity drier selection, like Pink Magnolia. Congruently we match sweet for sweet and drink the lighter sweet reds. Sweet Caroline or Sunset Red would hit the spot!

In recent years, the Skittles, the Nerds, and Sour Patch candies have emerged as fall time favorites. Pair the fruitiness with the candy to the fruitiness of the wine. Sour Patch Kids pair well with the tangy Magnolia, serving up full fruit with a dry finish. Magnolia with its crisp citrus tones will also make the Nerds pop and the Skittles smooth!

What Halloween treats are you looking most forward to having with your Duplin wine this year?

The Perfect Fall Picnic

FallPicnicThe Perfect Fall Picnic

Planning a fall picnic this season?

Aside from the harder decisions you make when you plan your picnic (location/occasion and company), preparing for the perfect fall picnic is easy!

Choose the perfect picnic basket by opting to go basketless! The traditional wicker baskets are bulky and non-insulated, which limits your food choices.blue_lifeissweeter

Insulated bags are lightweight and collapsible, offering gracious space and temperature protection. Add some ice to keep your food cold! Pack your beverages in a separate tote for ease of access and to minimize the “squish” factor. Duplin Winery’s four bottle insulated wine bag is the perfect accessory for your picnic. Add a lightweight corkscrew and a couple of acrylic wine glasses and you will be ready to toast.

Store water in collapsible, reusable bottles–They are considerably lighter than the hard plastic variety. Never let the lack of proper utensils keep you from your food. Shop your local flea market or yard sale and pick up some odds and end serving pieces. It won’t break the bank, and you won’t be heartbroken if you lose a piece or two along the way. Keep the pieces handy in a Ziploc bag that stays with your basket! Add a flexible cutting mat and some cleaning wipes and you will be ready to go!

When planning your meal, be mindful of adding food items that may require refrigeration. Consider finger foods like fried chicken, sandwiches, cheese and crackers! If you plan to pack sandwiches, invest in a sturdy plastic sandwich container that will keep the bread fresh. Store meats, cheeses, and condiments separately to avoid the soggy sandwich and opt for vinegar based sauces which are not as likely to spoil!

PB & J is great on the go but remember to add peanut butter to both insides of the bread before adding the jelly. The added layer will prevent the jelly from soaking through the bread! If you are packing crushable items (chips or crackers), try adding extra air to your Ziploc bags! The pillow-like protection will keep the crush to a minimum! Keep a few empty bags handy for loading up the leftovers for the trip home.

Don’t forget dessert! Easy to serve items like cookies, brownies or cupcakes are always a hit. Leftovers? Store the leftovers in the extra zip lock bags you packed in your picnic tote. If your cold pack or ice has melted before you return home- throw away the leftovers that required refrigeration! Better safe than sorry!

Pack your blanket (preferably one that is thick or has a waterproof underside) and a trash bag. You will be glad to have both. A water bowl for the pooch and a Frisbee for you all… add in the bug spray and the perfect fall picnic is yours.

The Perfect Beach Day

BeachDayThe Perfect Beach Day

Beach season is here!

Just like packing a picnic takes time and care, putting together the perfect beach day is an art. It’s time to sit back and relax, listen to the waves, find your favorite book and have a cold drink in hand. Here’s everything you need for the perfect beach day.

Tote Bag – The perfect beach day starts with packing, and you’ll need a tote bag or backpack for the process to begin. Everyone is different when it comes to packing and planning for the day. Make sure your bag is big enough to hold all of the essentials like towels, sunscreen, and a hat. Plus, you’ll also want to have a durable bag that is tightly woven to keep sand from coming in.

Wine – “I only drink on days that end with Y.” At least that is our motto! Wine is acceptable for any occasion, especially on those warm summer days. Our recommendation is Duplin’s Red and White Sangria combined. Also, you can bring some delicious sliced fruit like oranges, blueberries, and strawberries, giving your sangria even more of a pleasant taste. Don’t forget the wine essentials like a corkscrew, wine topper, and wine tumbler.

Snacks – With bringing wine and snacks to the beach, you’ll want to find yourself a small cooler making it easy to keep everything in one place. A favorite at Duplin Winery is our Muscadine Pineapple & Habanero Dip, which is ideal for snacking at the beach. Simply mix our Muscadine Pineapple & Habanero Salsa with cream cheese creating a yummy dip. Enjoy the dip with your favorite crackers or pretzels.

Entertainment – Don’t forget to bring along entertainment for the day like your favorite book, a music player or corn hole. While sitting at the beach and watching the waves may be all some people need, you’ll be happy to have another form of entertainment nearby.

The perfect beach day is all about what you decide to make it. Whether you go with family and friends, or enjoy a relaxing day alone. Follow these simple tips, and you’ll be sure to have a relaxing day.
