From New York to California, many celebrate the new year with traditional dishes that are considered to bring good luck and fortune.

If you are from the south, collards are a must on your New Year's menu. If you are from a more northernly state, you may opt instead for sauerkraut for your leafy green vegetable. Both are considered to represent money and prosperity.

Pork is also a very popular fare for many, from ham to tenderloin to bratwurst. Pigs move forward when they eat, and the meat is much fattier than other cuts of meat. This symbolizes a healthy, full wallet and extra good luck in the days to come.

Another staple item to be found on plates everywhere is beans and lentils, which represent good luck in the shape of a coin. Make sure to eat as many beans or lentils as possible on the first day of the new year, this will ensure that your pockets will always be full of money.

There are many other foods to consume to stockpile on good luck. What is your family's favorite lucky dish for your new year menu? Leave a comment below and let us know!
