Father’s Day Celebration Ideas

Not sure what to do for Dad? Here are some sweet suggestions!

Daddy, Pop, Father, Dad … whatever name he goes by, it’s his time to shine! Father’s Day is a grand time to say, “Thank you!” for all of the hard work and sacrifices dads make and for all of the fun and valuable lessons they share with us.

What will you do to celebrate the special man in your life? Will you break out the catcher’s mitt, fire up the grill or head to the lake or golf course with Dad to celebrate? Will you surprise your grandfather with a phone call to thank him for steering you in the right direction as you were growing up? Will you remember someone who stepped in to help you at a time when you really needed a father in your life? Will you let your husband know how much he means to you and your children?

If you’re lucky enough to still have your dad in your life, why not take some time on Father’s Day to learn something new from him or to learn something you never knew about him? Who was his best friend in school? What was his least favorite subject? What sport does he wish he had played? Who was his favorite musical group? Share your own answers to these questions, too. You might have a good laugh and find that you have more in common than you ever knew! (You can do this in person or with a phone call, a Skype session or any other way … there are so many ways to communicate today.)

It wouldn’t be a holiday without food. Here are two ideas for Father’s Day meals, using our recipes, paired with Duplin wines, of course!

Father’s Day Brunch:

Roasted Red Pepper Omelet (using Duplin’s Roasted Red Pepper & Onion Relish)
• Dad’s favorite bread (If you live in the South, you’d better have biscuits!)
• Duplin’s new Sweet Rosé wine (perfect for a sparkling toast to Dad)

Father’s Day Cook Out:

Dave’s Famous Rib Recipe (using Duplin’s Muscadine Smokehouse Grilling Sauce)
• Dad’s favorite summer sides (baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw come to mind)
• A selection of Duplin red wine: Burgundy (for the dry wine drinkers), Hatteras Red and Black River Red

Above: Dave Fussell Jr.’s Famous Rib Recipe is one that will surprise your dad with its aroma and smokey flavor.

If you can’t be with your grill master this Father’s Day, why not surprise him with a great gift of a Duplin Sauce Trio to use the next time he lights up the grill? Or create a specialized gift basket by adding his favorite Duplin Gourmet products to a carrier that reflects his interests—a tackle box, tool box, cooler or beach bag are just a few ideas to get you started!

History of Father’s Day:

• Celebrations honoring fathers have taken place in various areas of the world for centuries, and fathers have been honored in parts of the United States since the early 20th century.
• Some people say the first Father’s Day in the U.S. was June 19, 1910, in Washington state, created by a woman to honor her father, who had raised six children on his own after his wife died. Others say it started in West Virginia a few years earlier.
• It wasn’t until 1966 that President Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June. (It was 1914 when President Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.)
• In 1972, President Nixon made Father’s Day a national holiday.

Planting a Seed

Duplin Pink Magnolia Wine

Planting a Seed

Do you remember the first time you planted a seed and watched it grow? Maybe you pushed a zinnia seed into some dirt in a paper cup at school, hoping it would bloom in time to take home for Mother’s Day. Or maybe you soaked a lima bean and placed it in a damp paper towel to sprout. Or perhaps you grew up on a farm, where planting was a family affair on a much bigger scale.

There’s nothing like getting your hands into the soil to grow your fresh food and flowers. Whether you live in a city with a community garden, in the country with an expansive view of the land, or somewhere in between, you can create a garden that’s perfect for your space. A pot of cherry tomatoes on a city balcony, rows of corn and beans on acres of land, an herb garden on your kitchen windowsill, hanging planters full of flowers on your front porch … big or small, you can connect to nature in your own way.

Think of your family’s favorite types of meals. Are you Italian foodies? Plant lots of tomatoes and onions, along with basil, oregano and other herbs. Is Mexican more your style? Don’t forget the hot peppers and cilantro!

Get some inspiration for your garden from our recipes that feature Duplin wines and gourmet products. For example, check out our Macaroni Shrimp Salad, and then plant the onions, radishes, tomatoes and green bell peppers that will bring a homegrown freshness to your dish. Fresh grown broccoli and red onions will blend perfectly with our Mango and Broccoli Salad dressed with Duplin’s Muscadine-Orange Poppyseed Dressing.

Why not plant some strawberries in a pot and then slice them up into a cold glass of Duplin’s Sangria Red once ripe? Dress up your Pink Magnolia with raspberries and blackberries and a lime slice for a refreshing summer treat.

Surround yourself with flowers, as well! Flowers bring butterflies and birds, and they bring colorful beauty to your patio and table. Enjoy a bottle Duplin’s new Sweet Rosé, then fill the empty bottle with water and some fresh cuttings from your flower garden for a simple centerpiece on your patio table. Now that’s a beautiful way to recycle!

At Duplin, we’re planting, too! If you visit us at our Rose Hill location, you may notice that we’ve added almost 200 acres to our vineyards this season. Muscadine vines are getting bigger each day as the days become warmer and warmer. In a few short years, those vines will yield sweet, delicious grapes — and that means more fresh and fruity muscadine wine for you.

So, get your hands in the dirt. Plant a seed and watch it grow. Then sit back and enjoy a glass of your favorite Duplin wine on a warm summer evening and celebrate the fruits of your gardening labors.

Cheers!
