When Family Visits, Keep It Simple!

Duplin Family Cheers

When Family Visits, Keep It Simple!

Summer is the time of year to pack up the car or board a flight and head off for a family visit. Sibling get-togethers, a week with grandparents, a first-time cousin visit…all across the country, families are getting together to catch up, renew bonds and make new memories.

If you are hosting out-of-town family members this summer, you’re probably trying to think of things to do. Remember: don’t “overdo” it; keep it simple! Welcome your visitors by placing a basket of brochures from your chamber of commerce or tourist bureau in the guest room, so they can see what your town has to offer.

Every community has its own special and unique attractions. Does your town have an art or historical museum? A street of local crafts and antique stores? A nature trail or city park? Many outings are free or quite inexpensive. A family visit is a great time to be a tourist in your own town!

If you live near one of our winery locations in Rose Hill, NC, or North Myrtle Beach, SC, why not bring your visitors in for a fun wine tasting? Check the “Music in the Courtyard” tab for a list of musicians, dates and times, so you can enjoy listening to your favorite local artists after your tasting. Of course, you’ll want to have lunch at The Bistro, if you’re visiting our Rose Hill location!

Keep it simple back at home, too. Casual seating, a few tasty snacks, and a good supply of Duplin wines should be all you need to get the conversation flowing and the laughter started! Keep in mind that everyone needs a little quiet time to unwind, so there’s no need to over plan!

Now’s the time for the generations to learn something from each other. The teens might show the older folks how to use the newest technologies to communicate once the family members go back to their own homes. In return, the aunts and uncles might pass down that family card game or other activity that has stood the test of time. Get out the old family photo albums—always good for a laugh, a few tears and great memories. A fun activity is to choose a few interesting photos and recreate them with a modern twist!

Casual family times call for casual eating, too. Pair simple grilled items with make-ahead salads. Pick up some of our Homemade Gourmet Crackers, and have plenty of veggies cut up and ready to dip at any time of the day.

Check out the recipes for any (or all) of these dips:

If you’re the visitor, bring along a Duplin wine gift for your host and hostess. Why not arrive with a three-pack of our newest wines—Sweet Rosé, Summertime Strut and Coastal Shag? Other ideas include a gift basket with a Sweetzer mix and Duplin wine pair or a Duplin Gourmet gift set. With a sweet gift like this, you’ll be sure to be invited back next summer!

Whatever you plan for your family’s visit, remember – it’s not about how many places you go or how much activity you pack in; it’s about the quality of time you spend together, strengthening bonds and creating lifelong memories.

Father’s Day Celebration Ideas

Dave and Jonathan Fussell

Father’s Day Celebration Ideas

Not sure what to do for Dad? Here are some sweet suggestions!

Daddy, Pop, Father, Dad … whatever name he goes by, it’s his time to shine! Father’s Day is a grand time to say, “Thank you!” for all of the hard work and sacrifices dads make and for all of the fun and valuable lessons they share with us.

What will you do to celebrate the special man in your life? Will you break out the catcher’s mitt, fire up the grill or head to the lake or golf course with Dad to celebrate? Will you surprise your grandfather with a phone call to thank him for steering you in the right direction as you were growing up? Will you remember someone who stepped in to help you at a time when you really needed a father in your life? Will you let your husband know how much he means to you and your children?

If you’re lucky enough to still have your dad in your life, why not take some time on Father’s Day to learn something new from him or to learn something you never knew about him? Who was his best friend in school? What was his least favorite subject? What sport does he wish he had played? Who was his favorite musical group? Share your own answers to these questions, too. You might have a good laugh and find that you have more in common than you ever knew! (You can do this in person or with a phone call, a Skype session or any other way … there are so many ways to communicate today.)

It wouldn’t be a holiday without food. Here are two ideas for Father’s Day meals, using our recipes, paired with Duplin wines, of course!

Father’s Day Brunch:

Roasted Red Pepper Omelet (using Duplin’s Roasted Red Pepper & Onion Relish)
• Dad’s favorite bread (If you live in the South, you’d better have biscuits!)
• Duplin’s new Sweet Rosé wine (perfect for a sparkling toast to Dad)

Above: Roasted Red Pepper Omelet is a Duplin favorite recipe using Roasted Red Pepper & Onion Dip.

Father’s Day Cook Out:

Dave’s Famous Rib Recipe (using Duplin’s Muscadine Smokehouse Grilling Sauce)
• Dad’s favorite summer sides (baked beans, potato salad and cole slaw come to mind)
• A selection of Duplin red wine: Burgundy (for the dry wine drinkers), Hatteras Red and Black River Red

Above: Dave Fussell Jr.’s Famous Rib Recipe is one that will surprise your dad with its aroma and smokey flavor.

If you can’t be with your grill master this Father’s Day, why not surprise him with a great gift of a Duplin Sauce Trio to use the next time he lights up the grill? Or create a specialized gift basket by adding his favorite Duplin Gourmet products to a carrier that reflects his interests—a tackle box, tool box, cooler or beach bag are just a few ideas to get you started!

History of Father’s Day:

• Celebrations honoring fathers have taken place in various areas of the world for centuries, and fathers have been honored in parts of the United States since the early 20th century.
• Some people say the first Father’s Day in the U.S. was June 19, 1910, in Washington state, created by a woman to honor her father, who had raised six children on his own after his wife died. Others say it started in West Virginia a few years earlier.
• It wasn’t until 1966 that President Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June. (It was 1914 when President Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.)
• In 1972, President Nixon made Father’s Day a national holiday.

Rosé All Day with Duplin Wine

Sweet Rosé Lemonade

Rosé All Day with Duplin Wine

Sweeten your day with these Sweet Rosé wine how-to’s and recipes!

This May, we released Sweet Rosé – our newest addition to our products list. Duplin Winery specializes in Muscadine wines, so naturally, this wine is made with a secret blend of delicious Muscadine grapes, just with an added fizz. Since our last product release in 2016, we have worked to create the perfect blend of red and white muscadines for the Sweet Rosé AND it finally arrived.

If we were to describe Sweet Rosé, we would say that Sweet Rosé is incredibly refreshing with a delightfully fresh and crisp flavor. This blush will enliven your senses with its vibrant and fruity aroma. Each sip is one to be relished and shared with good company. Best served chilled.

How to ‘Rosé All Day’:

1. Stock up on Duplin’s Sweet Rosé
2. Clear a day on your calendar
3. Invite experienced ‘Rosé All Day’ers’ (AKA anyone who needs an excuse to spend the day sipping Rosé with you)
4. Open Sweet Rosé
5. Pour Sweet Rosé
6. Remember, you can’t ‘Rosé All Day’ if you don’t start in the morning!
7. A recommended step is adding a delicious brunch to your day!

Our Favorite Sweet Rosé Recipes:

1. Sweet Rosé Bellini

• Add 1-part Peach Purée and 3-parts Sweet Rosé.
• OR, add 1-part Peach Schnapps and 3-parts Sweet Rosé.

2. Moscow Mule Mimosa

• Add 1-part vodka, 1-part fresh lime juice, 2-parts ginger beer, and 2-parts Sweet Rosé. Then garnish with lime wedges and mint leaves!

3. Sweet Rosé Lemonades

• Pour half a glass of store-bought lemonade (or homemade if that’s how you roll) in your glass, then finish with Sweet Rosé and garnish with a lemon wedge! You can use regular lemonade or pink lemonade – we recommend regular since Sweet Rosé is already pink!
• Rim champagne flutes with a lemon wedge and dip in sugar for an extra garnish!

4. Raspberry Rosé Coolers

• Fill champagne flute with ¾ Sweet Rosé and add 1 small scoop of Raspberry Sorbet. Garnish with frozen raspberries!

5. Sweet Rosé Jell-O Shots

• Mix Jell-O mix and plain gelatin in a bowl and stir. Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and stir until gelatin is dissolved. Slowly pour in 3 cups of chilled Sweet Rosé and stir gently and let the bubbles to pop. Pour the Jell-O mix into individual containers or in an 8x8 dish. Cover and chill until firm.
• For an extra garnish, add sprinkles or edible glitter on top before chilling.

Above: Sweet Rosé can be purchased at either Duplin Winery location or online. When purchased by the case, Heritage Club Members receive a 25% off case discount on 12 Duplin wines and the general public can receive 20% discount.

Tips:

1. Add orange juice for a classic Rosé-mosa!
2. Add mint leaves for a hint of mint and pretty garnish!
3. Add cinnamon whiskey for a kick!
4. Add fresh fruit or frozen fruit for a pretty garnish!
5. Add pomegranate juice and seeds!

Planting a Seed

Duplin Pink Magnolia Wine

Planting a Seed

Do you remember the first time you planted a seed and watched it grow? Maybe you pushed a zinnia seed into some dirt in a paper cup at school, hoping it would bloom in time to take home for Mother’s Day. Or maybe you soaked a lima bean and placed it in a damp paper towel to sprout. Or perhaps you grew up on a farm, where planting was a family affair on a much bigger scale.

There’s nothing like getting your hands into the soil to grow your fresh food and flowers. Whether you live in a city with a community garden, in the country with an expansive view of the land, or somewhere in between, you can create a garden that’s perfect for your space. A pot of cherry tomatoes on a city balcony, rows of corn and beans on acres of land, an herb garden on your kitchen windowsill, hanging planters full of flowers on your front porch … big or small, you can connect to nature in your own way.

Think of your family’s favorite types of meals. Are you Italian foodies? Plant lots of tomatoes and onions, along with basil, oregano and other herbs. Is Mexican more your style? Don’t forget the hot peppers and cilantro!

Get some inspiration for your garden from our recipes that feature Duplin wines and gourmet products. For example, check out our Macaroni Shrimp Salad, and then plant the onions, radishes, tomatoes and green bell peppers that will bring a homegrown freshness to your dish. Fresh grown broccoli and red onions will blend perfectly with our Mango and Broccoli Salad dressed with Duplin’s Muscadine-Orange Poppyseed Dressing.

Why not plant some strawberries in a pot and then slice them up into a cold glass of Duplin’s Sangria Red once ripe? Dress up your Pink Magnolia with raspberries and blackberries and a lime slice for a refreshing summer treat.

Surround yourself with flowers, as well! Flowers bring butterflies and birds, and they bring colorful beauty to your patio and table. Enjoy a bottle Duplin’s new Sweet Rosé, then fill the empty bottle with water and some fresh cuttings from your flower garden for a simple centerpiece on your patio table. Now that’s a beautiful way to recycle!

Above: Macaroni Shrimp Salad. Below: Mango and Broccoli Salad.

At Duplin, we’re planting, too! If you visit us at our Rose Hill location, you may notice that we’ve added almost 200 acres to our vineyards this season. Muscadine vines are getting bigger each day as the days become warmer and warmer. In a few short years, those vines will yield sweet, delicious grapes — and that means more fresh and fruity muscadine wine for you.

So, get your hands in the dirt. Plant a seed and watch it grow. Then sit back and enjoy a glass of your favorite Duplin wine on a warm summer evening and celebrate the fruits of your gardening labors.

Cheers!

Treat your mother to a special Mother’s Day

Duplin’s New Year Resolutions
Treat your mother to a special Mother’s Day

What’s your favorite Mother’s Day memory? Did you make a hand-print card and a bouquet of paper flowers in elementary school, anxiously waiting to take your creation out of the backpack and present it to your mom on her special day? Did your own child make you breakfast in bed, even though you hated the thought of getting crumbs on the sheets? Perhaps there was another special woman in your life … an aunt or a neighbor or someone else who did “mom” things for you.

Who is the special woman in your life today? Is she someone who taught you things you’ll carry with you forever? Someone who cares about you from many miles away? Someone whose smile lights up a room and makes the world a better place? Mother’s Day is the perfect time to say, “Thank you!”

If you’re lucky enough to live close to this wonderful woman, why invite her to a celebration lunch this Mother’s Day? Make it a special time, just for the two of you to get together. Pull out a couple of old crystal wine glasses and some pretty plates for a luncheon on the porch. Or, load up the picnic basket with paper plates, cups and a blanket, stock the cooler with food and Duplin wine, and head out to a favorite family spot. Whatever you do, remember that it’s about time together, celebrating the woman who gave you so much!

If you are looking for menu suggestions for the perfect Mother’s Day treat, check out the recipes on our website. Here are two springtime lunch menu suggestions, using our recipes, paired with Duplin wines, of course!

Duplin Winery makes donation to American Heart Association

Duplin Winery makes donation to American Heart Association

On Monday, December 18th, Duplin Winery hosted a private event to present the American Heart Association with a donation check of $5,000. The event was held at Duplin Winery in North Myrtle Beach included live entertainment from the Rick & Lesa Duo, brunch style hors d’oeuvres donated by Chick-fil-A and wine.

This generous donation was a result of proceeds from the Red Wine Sale that took place in October. Duplin Winery partnered with the American Heart Association to support the 2017 Waccamaw Heart Walk. The winery had a special case discount on red wine in conjunction with the walk where a portion of the proceeds was given back to the American Heart Association. The Waccamaw Heart Walk helps build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

“We are thrilled to be able to make this donation,” stated Jonathan Fussell, co-owner of Duplin Winery. “This donation wouldn’t have been made without the support of our community. It’s amazing to see everyone come together and support an organization that has helped so many. We are committed to improving the lives of our customers and employees in every way we can.”
