Get Your Game On!

Get Your Game On

Get Your Game On!

The kids are back in school, the leaves are starting to change color, and there’s a little chill in the night air. But nothing says fall in America quite like football.

Even if you’re not lucky enough to snag seats for your favorite college or professional football team’s biggest game of the season, you can still enjoy all the excitement of game day by creating your own “tailgate party” at home. Why not plan a party for your team’s “rivalry day?”

Invite your friends and neighbors, set up a tent, get out the college/pro logo chairs, fill the coolers with ice, chill down the Duplin wine, and get ready for a good time and some healthy competition. It’s always fun when you invite people from both camps. Encourage everyone to wear their favorite team’s colors and come ready to cheer.

There’s no need to worry about having the biggest television in the neighborhood. People can gather around any size screen (or multiple TVs in adjacent rooms) and still have a roaring good time. Remember that even the smallest TV screen gives us a much better view than the vast majority of the seats in a stadium!

Of course, there’s got to be food. Guests always feel good if they can chip in with munchies, a side dish or dessert, so if they ask, just say, “Bring it on, thanks!” It’s not the time for a formal meal or meal plan, so let the creativity flow.

Dip In!

Two make-ahead dips that are sure to be a hit are Duplin’s Muscadine Pepper Jack Cheese Dip and Brice’s Creek Spinach Artichoke Dip. Be sure to make more than you think you’ll need because you’ll be surprised at how fast they go. Pair the dips with Duplin’s Homemade Gourmet Crackers, and even friends rooting for the “other” team may come on over to your side!

Fire Up the Grill!

A tailgate party wouldn’t be complete without food on the grill. From steaks and ribs marinated with your secret sauce, to something as simple as hot dogs, the choices are endless. A perfect appetizer or side that will score points with your friends is an employee’s favorite, Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Bites with Habanero Cream Cheese Filling.

Why not make it a burger party? Today’s burgers can be so much more than a simple patty of ground beef. Different meats (or veggies/beans), cheeses and a wide variety of toppings will give everyone a delicious experience. Grill up a variety of burgers and let everyone create their own masterpieces by setting out a range of toppers.

Here are two of our favorite burger recipes, using Duplin wines:

Basil Burgers (ground beef, with Christmas Eve or Bald Head Red wine)

Blackberry Basil Burgers (ground turkey, with Duplin Blackberry wine)

You can even add another layer of competition to the day with a burger cook off! Have several friends contribute their special burgers to the grill, and then let the kids choose the winner in a blind taste test.

Bring on the Competition!

Speaking of competition, add another layer of fun with some tailgate party games. Corn hole is a classic, and the boards can be painted (or use decals) with competing teams’ logos/mascots. A football toss, relay race, tug of war and so many more games will spark the competitive spirit and keep the fun flowing.

Just remember … keep the competition friendly and keep the game-day party Cool, Sweet and Easy with an ice chest full of your favorite Duplin wines. Game on!

Back in the Groove

Back in the Groove

Back in the Groove

All across America, families with school-age children and those with educators are getting back into their school-year routine after a summer of laid-back days and fun adventures. Even in households without the dictates of school schedules, summertime seems to be much more relaxed and less structured. Meals are less formal, bedtimes and mornings have a bit more flexibility, and in general, “the living is easy.”

Then, just as we get used to the rhythms of summer, we see back-to-school ads and smile at friends’ “first day of school” photos on social media, and we wonder what happened to summer. It must be time to snap out of our leisure and get back in the groove!

Even though the transition can sometimes be tough, there’s actually a certain comfort in routines. Regular bedtimes, daily lunch preparation, the morning rush, and even homework hour give us a sense of balance.

What’s your favorite part of getting back into the rhythm of early fall? Is it watching your college team’s first football game and knowing what your Saturday afternoons will look like for the foreseeable future? Do you like pulling out a sweater or hoodie as the air gets crisp? Are you waiting for the first leaves to turn? Do you love opening up the windows for some cool, fresh air? Or maybe you’re the one who can’t wait to see the first ad for this season’s pumpkin-flavored-everything!

Part of the back-to-school routine is back to family dinner time, a time to refuel from a busy day, but also to catch up on happenings at school and at work. Weeknight dinners don’t have to be fancy, and meals don’t have to be time-consuming to prepare. Here are two ideas to put into your weeknight rotation:

Panini Night

Make a new tradition of Panini Night once a week. Paninis are delightful grilled sandwiches that are easy to make. Start with Duplin’s recipe for Mozzarella Panini, made with Duplin’s Muscadine Red Pepper & Onion Relish. Just add a salad, and you’ve got a simple weeknight meal. For fun, see which family member can come up with the most creative and delicious panini fillings. Try a new idea each week for a month, then take a vote!

Breakfast for Dinner

Another popular week night meal is breakfast for dinner. The morning rush often means that breakfast is something to grab and go. But a more relaxed suppertime can be SUPER-time with breakfast food! Try our Roasted Red Pepper Omelet, also made with our Muscadine Red Pepper & Onion Relish. Fluffy biscuits, hash browns, pancakes or waffles, sausage and other breakfast foods can come together fairly quickly for a delicious and nutritious evening meal.

Create a new routine!

There’s no reason that this year’s routines have to be exactly the same as last year’s. Maybe it’s time to shake up the old routine with something new in the lineup. Start a new tradition. Here are just a few ideas:

• Visit a park: Once a month, explore a new park or museum. Keep a list of family favorites.

• Take a class: Learn a new craft or skill at a community education class or by teaching yourself. You might want to pick something for the whole family to learn together.

• Learn a game: A new card or board game will be a great addition to your family game time.

As the days start getting shorter and the evening air gets cooler, one routine that everyone enjoys is sitting outside for a few minutes to wind down and decompress from the busy day. Take a glass of your favorite Duplin red, white or blush wine to the porch, deck, or yard; sit back, look up, and count your blessings.

The Magic of Moonlight

Midnight Magnolia

If you’ve been invited to share someone’s front porch or a meal, Midnight Magnolia is the perfect gift wine for the host and hostess. The blue bottle is its own beautiful package, and the medium-sweet wine inside will please almost every wine drinker.

The Magic of Moonlight

Midnight Magnolia is Back!

After a hot summer day, there’s nothing like the relative coolness of a summer evening. Feel the gentle rhythm of the porch swing or rocker as the crickets start their chorus, throw a blanket down on the dewy grass to star gaze, or listen to the city sounds from your front stoop or balcony. It’s the time of day to wind down with your favorite people and savor a glass of your favorite Duplin wine.

We’ve got great news! Midnight Magnolia is back in stock. Our very popular estate wine, in its stunning blue bottle, Midnight Magnolia is a medium sweet, smooth and fruity white wine with a fresh crisp finish that you will fall in love with … in the moonlight or at any time of day!

Have dessert outside in the moonlight!

Check out our recipe for this refreshing dessert of Duplin’s Berry Cool Wine Jello. It’s perfect at the end of a hot summer day. Or simply treat yourself to Duplin’s Homemade Wine Coolers using Sunset Red wine.

Stargazing

A great time to stargaze will be on July 13, with this month’s New Moon (the opposite of the bright Full Moon). Find a dark spot and look up; as your eyes adjust to the darkness, you will be amazed at the number of stars you can see. Can you find any constellations? The Milky Way? Perhaps you can find a planet, a human-made satellite or even a shooting star! Don’t forget to make a wish!

Moon Watch:

If you’re a moon watcher, the Full Moon is July 27 this year. Did you know that July’s Full Moon is called the Buck Moon, after the male deer’s (buck’s) antlers that begin to emerge at this time of year? (It is also called the Thunder Moon or the Hay Moon.) Have some family fun and makeup stories about how the moon got its names!

Whether moon watching or star gazing, be sure to have plenty of your favorite Duplin wine on hand. In addition to Midnight Magnolia, we suggest our “Cool, Sweet and Easy” collection. These wines are fresh, fruity and light … perfect for a summer evening.

Add Moon Music:

Here are some “midnight” and “moonlight” songs to get your summer-night playlist started:

• Moonshadow (Cat Stevens)
• Moondance (Van Morrison)
• Moon River (trivia question: In which movie was this song first sung?*)
• Fly Me to the Moon (Frank Sinatra and many others have crooned to this one!)
• Midnight at the Oasis (Maria Muldaur)
• Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Knight & the Pips)
• After Midnight (Eric Clapton)

How many more songs with “midnight” or “moon” in the title can you think of to add to the playlist? Let us know in the comments below.
*Audrey Hepburn sang “Moon River” in the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
