It’s “Taco Party” time!

Duplin’s New Year Resolutions
It’s “Taco Party” time!

Cinco de Mayo (translated: May 5) is a great excuse to bring out some Mexican flavors and invite friends and family to join you at a make-your-own taco bar.

Why “make-your-own”? It helps to keep the festivities casual and fun. Party-goers mix and mingle as they gather around the table to make their own creations—and maybe get a fun idea from the taco maker to the left or right. Gathering over food is a time-honored way to build friendships and let go of the cares of the world. Add wine and some Latin music, and you’ve got all the makings for a fiesta to remember!

What goes better with tacos than Duplin’s Sangria White or Sangria Red?

Some of each! Have plenty of chilled bottles, or for a festive approach, put out a pitcher full of Duplin’s Sangria White with sliced oranges, lemons and/or limes and a pitcher full of Duplin’s Sangria Red with some sliced strawberries. Set out your wine glasses, and let people choose … white, red, or a mixture of both!

Did someone say, “Margarita!”?

Add to the fun by blending up a batch of Margarita Sweetzers, made with Duplin’s Carlos wine. For an added touch, cut up some lime wedges to garnish the margaritas.

Make-your-own Taco Bar:

Creating a make-your-own taco bar is easy, and most of the preparation can be done well before the party begins. That’s another key to a fun and casual event—the host or hostess will be as relaxed and involved as the guests! Here are some ideas for the taco bar; be sure to add your own favorites, too.

  • Taco shells: choice of hard and soft shells, corn and flour
  • Proteins: 2 or 3 choices, such as ground beef with taco seasoning, grilled shrimp or chicken, seasoned black beans
  • Toppings: chop up and put into individual bowls several items, such as tomatoes, lettuce, shredded cheeses, jalapeño peppers, black olives, sour cream
  • Colorful plates and napkins (paper plates are fine for adding to the casual approach and for easy clean up)
  • Don’t forget to keep big bowls full of nacho chips. Serve the chips with guacamole (store-bought or homemade) and Duplin’s Muscadine Pineapple Habanero Salsa!

Fun Facts:

  • Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican Army’s surprising victory over the French at Puebla in 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War.
  • Cinco de Mayo is NOT the celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day (that event is celebrated on September 16, so stock up on Sangria and get ready for another taco party in a few months)!
  • Cinco de Mayo is actually more widely celebrated in the United States than in Mexico—but then, we’re all in for any excuse for a party with tacos, Duplin Sangrias and Margarita Sweetzers!
