Port Wine Sangria

The game-changer in this sangria is soaking the fruit in Duplin American Port and finishing the drink with ginger beer. With a hit of brandy and notes of dried fruit, the sweet port adds an extra kick plus special flavor. In fall and winter, use apples, oranges and frozen cherries in this sangria. Finish the drink with any Duplin red wine, but in fall Pum'kin is especially nice because it's hint of cozy spices picks up the port's caramel notes. A splash of ginger at the end provides a little fizz and brings all the flavors together.

Ingredients:

  • 1 apple, cored, cut in half and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup frozen cherries
  • 1 orange, cut in quarters and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup red grapes
  • 3 cups Duplin American Port
  • 2 cups Duplin Pum'kin or another Duplin red wine, chilled
  • 2-3 cans ginger beer, well chilled

Directions:

  1. Place apples, cherries, oranges and grapes into a large pitcher.
  2. Pour Duplin American Port over the fruit. The port should completely cover the fruit. Add more port is necessary.
  3. Refrigerate fruit and port mixture at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours.
  4. Remove the pitcher of the fruit and port mixture from the refrigerator. Add Duplin Pum'kin to fill the pitcher. Stir mixture until the port, fruit and wine are well combined.
  5. Add a few pieces of fruit to glasses. Pour sangria into glasses until the glasses are two-thirds full. Top off each glass with cold ginger beer.
  6. Makes 10 to 12 servings.
